This is an inventory of everything I carried
when I left Springer Mountain on my first
backpacking trip...
...Ouch!
A spade? A sponge? Cotton socks? Knife
and whetstone! Wow...I learned very quickly
what I needed and what I didn't need. Of
course, this can vary greatly among
individuals. What might be an important item
for one hiker to carry might seem pointless to
another. There are no hard and fast rules
--except maybe one: If you don't use it in the
first fifty miles, you probably don't need it!

The Things I Started With
|
This is me at my first stop along the A.T.,
Neels Gap, about 31 miles into my trip. I'm
going through my gear and sending home all
of the things I don't need. I learned quickly
that every ounce counts!
